The Morris Proper
One of the most formidable contenders in the Restaurant and Bar Design Awards 2026, The Morris Proper is a brand-new farm to table restaurant located at the ground level of Sanofi’s new flagship workplace in downtown Morristown, New Jersey.
Enriching the region’s culinary landscape, this vibrant new neighbourhood gathering place at 100 Morris Street is a full-service restaurant that serves as both a workplace amenity and a neighbourhood destination, elevating casual dining through thoughtful, hospitality-driven design.
Entered in the award’s Standalone category, the venue’s stunning architecture and interiors were designed by Gensler with SJP Properties as developers and general contractors for the project.
Set in the heart of downtown Morristown, The Morris Proper offers a sophisticated yet relaxed setting that transitions seamlessly from day to night – from lunch to after work drinks to dinner with friends. More than a place to dine, it’s a gathering space where a locally inspired menu by an award-winning chef is complemented by an environment designed to enhance the experience of every guest.
Whitney Eveler, Design Director at Gensler, commented: “The 12,000-square-foot space is organized around a central 360-degree bar that acts as both architectural anchor and social hub, creating a contemporary interpretation of the town square that encourages guests to connect and linger. Surrounding it, a series of layered dining environments support a range of experiences – from high-energy gathering points to more intimate, tucked-away settings – allowing the space to transition throughout the day. Every detail – including staff attire, menu design and the restaurant name – contributes to a cohesive, vibrant atmosphere.”
The space unfolds in layers, balancing social energy with intimate moments. Open kitchens offer a front-row view of the action while also serving as a lively backdrop. Seating ranges from stools at the bar for a close-up view of the activity, to plush booths and small tables for intimate meals, to window lounges for a more relaxed experience. A wraparound outdoor terrace extends the restaurant seasonally, offering an alfresco setting that connects indoor and outdoor dining.
An atmosphere of elegance and ease is reinforced through the materials palette. Natural woods, metals, leather, marble, ribbed glass, and earth-toned accents evoke warmth while bold floral prints and curated shelving introduce personality. Greenery is integrated throughout to bring a restorative energy. A day-to-night lighting approach shifts the energy of the space across different hours, supporting both daytime brightness and evening intimacy.
Whitney Eveler summited up: “At its core, The Morris Proper is designed as a highly adaptable hospitality environment – one that supports everyday use while elevating the experience of casual dining through detail, layering, and atmosphere. The result is a space that feels both luxurious and approachable, thoughtfully designed for everyday moments as well as special occasions.
